How to Choose the Right Vinyl Fence for Your Backyard

You’ve finally made the decision to go with maintenance free vinyl fencing for your backyard! Now it’s time to decide which vinyl fencing is right for the project. There are several things to consider when making this decision. There is a multitude of styles, colors, heights, accessories, and textures. Choosing the right ones will depend greatly on your yard and what you are fencing in or out of it.

Vinyl Fence Styles

Choosing the style is one of the biggest decisions. You may want something decorative, to enclose your pets or maybe to provide privacy for your pool. With the many decoration options of vinyl, you can find something to suit your needs.

  • Privacy fencing: Has side by side slats or comes in one solid piece to provide privacy of course. You can also add decorative options like lattice work on the top which can be squared with the fence or rounded.
  • Semi-private fence: This type of fencing provides privacy with a small spacing in between the slats to allow for airflow. It’s ideal in warmer climates when you would need the breeze to move freely through your backyard.
  • Picket Fence: This is a classic style with a timeless look. It’s ideal to add a decorative touch to landscaping and create an appealing non-invasive boundary.
  • Post and Rail Fence: The style that you see used as an animal enclosure with horses or cattle. You can go with 2-4 rails depending on the height you need. This vinyl fence style is also used widely as a decorative option.
  • Pool Fencing: Depending on your local building code this fence may be required to be at least 4ft high and the slats 4 inches apart. This is the standard vinyl fencing you typically see our pools in housing developments, townhomes, or apartment complexes.

Vinyl Fence Colors and Textures

The color choice of your fence is solely for decorative purposes. A stark white may provide a nice pop without being too bold. While a neutral almond could bring a sense of calm to a highly populated neighborhood. There’s also blues and greys to provide a color accent to your landscaping.

Texture is for decoration as well. However, the smoother the texture the easier it will be to get it to rinse clean. If you prefer a more decorative texture that resembles a wood grain then vinyl fencing can accommodate that. You could also go with a completely smooth texture that looks more like an iron fence.

Fencing Height

The height depends on its purpose. If you are trying to contain dogs that jump, or provide yourself with some privacy you may want to go with a fence that is 5-8 ft. high.

Rather, if you are aiming for solely decoration and a barrier then 3-4 ft. will be plenty tall enough. It may be more of a decision of whether you want to be able to see over the fence or not.

Vinyl Fence Accessories

For the most part accessories are based on decorative needs as well. Some accessories options are

  • Outdoor lights: These can be placed on top of fence posts or mounted to the fence itself.
  • Decorative post caps: These are used at the top of your posts and come in a large variety of decorative options.
  • Corner fence shelves: are useful if you need to have a space to set things like drinks, swimming goggles, or even plants.
  • Arbors or Pergolas: These can be added atop gateways or along your fence to add a bit of shade and a decorative flair.
  • Planter boxes or hooks: If you’re a plant lover then these accessories would be ideal for you. They provide an extended planting space that also looks amazing.

Vinyl fence accessories are a plenty and while we have listed some of the most popular options there are many more to choose from.
